​​Laboratory Professionals:

Senior Research Microbiologist

  • Will perform molecular virology studies (detection and typing and high-level characterization) on viral gastroenteritis viruses including norovirus and sapovirus strain.
  • Will participate in burden of disease studies of norovirus outbreaks, sporadic cases and birth cohorts
  • Will evaluate multi-enteric pathogen diagnostic platforms for the detection of viruses, bacteria and parasites
  • Will ensure the proper handling of specimens to include the processing as well as labeling of specimens.
  • Will enter test results and other work-related information into the appropriate laboratory database daily.
  • Will operate and maintain laboratory equipment as well as perform quality assurance and quality control activities according to established CDC standards.
  • Will prepare written and/or verbal scientific summaries and present them to team members and colleagues as needed.
  • Will use Microsoft Office Suite to document specimen and test information. This includes generating and updating test request lists and worksheets, printing labels as well as writing standard operating procedures.
  • Will lead studies to evaluate novel diagnostic platforms for the detection of gastroenteris viruses
  • Will be the responsible lead author on output from above mentioned projects and studies leading to scientific publications and presentations at scientific meetings.
  • Will perform other duties as assigned.

Research Microbiologist

  • Will evaluate molecular diagnostic platforms for the detection of norovirus and other gastroenteritis viruses and determine their sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy
  • Will ensure the proper handling of specimens to include the processing as well as labeling of specimens.
  • Will enter test results and other work-related information into the appropriate laboratory database daily.
  • Will operate and maintain laboratory equipment as well as perform quality assurance and quality control activities according to established CDC standards.
  • Will prepare written and/or verbal scientific summaries and present them to team members and colleagues as needed.
  • Will use Microsoft Office Suite to document specimen and test information. This includes generating and updating test request lists and worksheets, printing labels as well as writing standard operating procedures.
  • Will submit technical reports and project summaries of tasks performed every 2-3 weeks to the team lead.
  • Will perform other duties as assigned.

Histologist – Support Services

  • Will perform approximately 20 – 50 histochemical special stains as well as 30 – 50 Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) stains per week.
  • Will process and embed approximately 15 – 20 human and animal tissue samples per week.
  • Will section approximately 50 – 100 paraffin-embedded tissue blocks per week.
  • Will ensure the proper handling of specimens to include the processing as well as labeling of specimens.
  • Will enter test results and other work-related information into the appropriate laboratory database daily.
  • Will operates and maintain laboratory equipment as well as perform quality assurance and quality control activities according to established CDC standards.
  • Will prepare written and/or verbal scientific summaries and present them to team members and colleagues as needed.
  • Will use Microsoft Office Suite to document specimen and test information. This includes generating and updating test request lists and worksheets, printing labels as well as writing standard operating procedures.
  • Will perform other duties as assigned.

Molecular Biologist – Support Services

  • Will perform nucleic acid extractions from 75-100 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections per week.
  • Will perform real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) / real time polymerase chain reaction assays on approximately 100-150 samples per week.
  • Will perform gel purification and nucleotide sequencing of PCR products for approximately 100 samples per week.
  • Will perform deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)/ribonucleic acid (RNA) transfers to other groups within CDC using the Enterprise Laboratory Information Management System (eLIMS) as needed.
  • Will operates and maintain laboratory equipment as well as perform quality assurance and quality control activities according to established CDC standards.
  • Will record and maintain both hardcopy and electronic copies of laboratory notebooks detailing experiments and related results.
  • Will submit technical reports and project summaries of tasks performed once a week.

Will perform other duties as assigned.
