Job Description
Gwinnett County is looking for Environmental Sustainability Officer for a perm role in Lawrenceville, GA. Relocation assistance available – Out of state candidates encouraged to apply. The Environmental Sustainability Officer will develop, implement, and administer a comprehensive environmental sustainability strategy and lead Gwinnett County’s environmental sustainability efforts. This position will work with leadership and department representatives to strategize and implement wide-ranging sustainability efforts including, but not limited to, climate change mitigation; resilience; recycling and waste reduction; water conservation; greenspace, parks, and preservation; transportation and fleet; green buildings and energy; community and regional livability; and outreach and education. Essential Duties · Lead the development, implementation, and promotion of Gwinnett County’s sustainability vision, goals, and strategies to maximize environmental and community value. Function as the County’s key sustainability advisor, innovator, and thought leader. Partner across departments to advance the County’s sustainability initiatives, including establishing and tracking meaningful targets and facilitating strategic internal and external communication and outreach. · Influence internal and external stakeholders throughout the organization and exhibit strong interpersonal skills, partnering with others to accomplish objectives and execute complex projects. Build and maintain strong advisory relationships with leadership and provide comprehensive progress updates to County leaders. Work closely with leaders and stakeholders to identify, evaluate, and respond to new sustainability risks and opportunities. · Research current environmental sustainability and resilience trends and technologies. Make recommendations and develop related policies, programs, practices, and plans to advance sustainability and resilience within County government operations and the community. Proactively integrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice considerations into proposed solutions. · Evaluate and communicate the impact of potential legal or regulatory changes in areas of sustainability. · Identify and pursue grants related to environmental sustainability. · Serve on a variety of internal and external committees, citizen advisory boards, task forces, and other agency committees to secure advocacy and influence support for programs and objectives. Work to secure public-private partnerships and non-profit organization engagement. · Oversee the County’s involvement in environmental sustainability certification programs, such as the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Green Communities Program. · Implement priorities, work processes, procedures, and/or training on established or modified organizational practices. Implement outcome-based best practices, research, and evaluation tools. · Manage, review, and participate in the collection and processing of data and information. Prepare and review a variety of related reports, statements, and communications. Audit a variety of data for quality control purposes. Direct and participate in the preparation, review, and submittal of work papers, communications, schedules, tables, and statements to and from internal and external stakeholders. · Develop and administer budgets, approve expenditures, and review and manage financial operations associated with environmental sustainability objectives. · Participate in special projects, task forces, meetings, committees, and/or training sessions. · Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Grade The grade for this position is 205. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, management, engineering, urban planning, architecture, business administration, public administration, or another related field; Nine years of senior level sustainability experience, including two years of management experience; Demonstrated leadership, management, and strategic planning skills; Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Strong project management, quantitative, and analytical skills; Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, rules and regulations related to environmental sustainability; · Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. · Valid Driver's License in State of residency.
