Qualifications

• Ability to follow guidelines on preparing soils samples for testing. This will involve the grinding and sieving of samples for testing as well as logging in samples as outlined above. • Ability to conduct, various phases of labeling, shipping, and receiving soil samples. • Ability to follow the USDA procedures used in laboratories for labeling and numbering samples as well as quality assurance programs and good laboratory practices. • Ability to operate and maintain processing equipment to prepare samples for analysis. • Ensure compliance with rules or regulatory requirements. • Skilled in basic computer operations in a Window’s environment.

Responsibilities

The professional will provide the following support: • Assist in unloading soil samples from various delivery methods. • This involves being able to pick up and move samples weighing up to and including 50 pounds. • Prepare soil samples; grind, and sieve samples, for testing to be analyzed. • This involves using a 2–5-pound mallet to pound the soil samples into smaller pieces. You will need to repeatedly pound the dirt to smaller particles so that they can pass it through a 12-inch circumference, 3-layer sieve that has a finer mesh for each level of the sieve. It may take more than one attempt at pounding and rolling/crushing the soil to get it to pass through the sieve. • This is a very repetitious and physically demanding task. • Transport samples to the appropriate area of the Lab for testing. Will ensure proper handling, and disposal of domestic and foreign soils that are regulated by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) • Will clean trunks and/or coolers to AHPIS guidelines before returning to field staff. • Able to use a manual pallet jack and dolly to move soil samples to storage and processing area. • For each sample submitted, will assign a sample ID label and record data into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). • Maintain processing and sampling equipment as per Laboratory Standard. Work Environment: The professional will be working in an active laboratory environment. The following are elements that they will be working in and around: • Moderate risks or discomforts from regular and recurring exposure to irritant chemicals that requires special safety precautions. • Exposure to moderate risks or discomforts such as high levels of noise and vibration, dust, grease, uncovered moving parts of machinery, or irritant fumes that require protective clothing and gear and special safety precautions. • The individuals will need to wear protective clothing; and other gear as the situation warrants. This includes always wearing pants (no shorts) and close toed shoes.

Job Description

We are looking for a Laborer for Laboratory for 1+ year Contract Role (with the option to be extended for 4 additional years) and offers excellent pay, paid holidays, paid time off and health benefits)

in Lincoln, NE.

NOTE: This is a physical demanding job.  The professional should understand that this work is not of a sedentary nature.  The work involves a lot of walking, standing, twisting, bending, and lifting of sample bags and boxes or cartons that can weigh 50 pounds.  This work includes repetitive hand movement such as swinging mallets/hammers, simple grasping, power grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation using both hands.  The professional needs to be able to meet the physical demands below.
